Physical Education and Sport are integral components of the Curriculum. We believe that the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle and participation in a range of regular sporting activities is essential to a balanced education. In the Early Years phase of development the focus is on skill development and encouraging an enjoyment of movement. A Perceptual Motor program is timetabled for two terms each year and is complemented with Movement Education, Athletics, ball skills, Dance and Gymnastics. Small game activities encourage group interaction and cooperative skills. In the Middle and Senior School the emphasis is on continued skill development, team interaction and sportsmanship through a variety of modified and major games. The range of intra-school and inter-school sports include Netball, Softball, Tee Ball, Rugby League, Soccer, Cricket and Basketball. There is also a range of leisure pursuits offered to senior school children and these run in line with the interschool sport program. Canoeing was introduced in 1998 as part of both the Physical education program and the Leisure Pursuits. Equipped with our own canoes the children are given the opportunity to participate in an Award scheme which is conducted during the year. Swimming classes are conducted at The Clem Jones Community Pool at Carina in first term and again in fourth term each year. During this intensive period of instruction the children have half hour lessons each day for eight days. As members of both the Gateway District and Catholic Primary Schools Sports associations we also participate in several interschool and representative swimming carnivals each year. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION Our Mission Statement articulates that "We are committed to the development of the whole child." In order to fulfill our mission we endeavour to provide a curriculum that embraces all aspects of the child's well-being: social, physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual. One avenue for doing this is the teaching of personal development which now forms part of the Health and Physical Education program. The curriculum within P.D.E. is designed to provide the opportunity for the child to develop - a sense of security - a sense of identity and positive self concept - a sense of purpose - a sense of belonging - a personal sense of competence. |
