ST MARTIN'S RESOURCE CENTRE

The St Martin's Resource Centre has an integral place in the teaching and learning programs initiated in the classroom. A wide range of resources is available to children, teachers and parents of the St Martin's community. Much more than a book repository, the resource centre contains a wealth of information in the form of books, magazines, journals, computer software, pictures, maps and charts, audio and video resources and a world of information accessed via the internet. It is a busy and dynamic place!

The Centre is staffed by a full-time Teacher-Librarian and a full-time library aide. Parent helpers provide invaluable assistance and are warmly welcomed and encouraged to assist in a variety of ways.

Children are encouraged to make good use of the Resource centre whether they visit in class groups, small groups or individually for either research or borrowing books. Children in the early years (Yrs 1-3) are required to use a drawstring library bag (35cm X 45cm) to extend the life of our much loved books. These are available for purchase from the school Uniform Shop. The use of library bags is recommended for older borrowers too. A waterproof lining will ensure that accidential damage is avoided.

The Resource Centre collection reflects the curriculum and learning needs of the students. The collection is automated and there are enquiry stations for student use. Supervised access to the Internet is also provided with appropriate sites recommended for use in the classroom. Together with classroom teachers, the teacher-librarian is involved in planning units of work through which information literacy skills are taught and practised and children are encouraged towards critical and independent use of information.

The Resource Centre is also a place in which many children can discover or indulge a love of literature. From time to time the Resource Centre hosts special literary events to foster and extend the children's engagement with books.
