THE CURRICULUM

St Martins offers the full primary school curriculum, now consisting of nine Key Learning Areas (K.L.A) :

  • Mathematics
  • English
  • Religious Education
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Science
  • Studies of Society and Environment
  • The Arts ( Music, Art, Media & Dance )
  • Technology
  • Cultural Literacy and Language - Italian

In line with modern primary education practice, these subjects are often taught in an integrated manner i.e. a unit of work may include a Language, Art and Science focus for instance.

A more detailed explanation of the curriculum content appropriate to each developmental level will be communicated to parents at the beginning of each term.

As part of the Brisbane Catholic Education Plan for schools in the Archdiocese, Choosing Our Future, recommendations for the writing and development of School based programs have been under way for a few years now. St Martin's now has a school English program, Mathematics program, Religious Education program and Health &Physical Education program, which are based on the Queensland Syllabus and were written with this community as their context.

Over the next 3 years Queensland will see syllabus being implemented in all the Key Learning Areas. Curriculum change and development is one area of St Martin's school life that is constantly under review, and professional development of teachers and support staff is of high priority so as to provide quality teaching and learning.

The Australian educational community and Brisbane Catholic Education's current focus upon an outcomes approach to education and learning is a high priority here at St Martin's. This development provides a challenge to school communities as we embrace a move from a content-based approach.

This outcomes based approach is

* Learner centred

* Considers lifelong learning

* Offers expanded opportunities within a variety of contexts

* Encourages a flexible approach

* Reflects a connected curriculum
