Around 1840 the McDougall brothers settled on land at the present
day site of Texas Station. The brothers went to try their luck on the
goldfields and returned to find their land occupied. The brothers likened
their battle to regain their land to the war over land between Texas and
Mexico and named their property Texas Station, so giving name to the area
and the town that developed by the picturesque Dumaresq River.
Texas Station was later separated from the town to which
it had given its name with the creation of the new state of Queensland,
the border of which split the Texas area from its parent colony. The
McDougall's homestead remained within New South Wales and the remains of
their original slab cottage still stands today.
The area was first settled by cattle graziers but farming soon
followed on the rich alluvial flats. Tobacco was introduced as a crop
around the late 1860's and quickly spread along the Dumaresq and McIntyre
river systems as commercial growing proved viable.
In the 1880's the first factory to process tobacco was built in
Texas and further development followed. Tobacco remained a mainstay of the
entire region for many decades. After the 2nd world war immigrants from
Europe became predominant in tobacco growing through its peak period in the
1950's after which it declined slowly in importance. The industry is now
virtually defunct bringing to an end a century of prominence for the crop
and the area. |

Texas has remained primarily an active sheep and cattle grazing area with activities also expanding to pigs, fine wool production, horses, deer, goats and ostriches. A major feedlot (Whyalla) is in operation along the Yelarbon road as is a large olive growing venture (Barkworths). Olive growing is a new venture for many farmers as the region works towards prominence in this industry. |

Other significant industries include logging and sawmilling, orchards,
horticultural production, renewed silver mining activity, and a growing
tourist industry. The people of Texas are justifiably proud of their community and its many attractions. Their efforts to showcase the highlights of the area, commemorate its achievements and welcome visitors with true country hospitality are a reflection of that pride. The whole community is aware of how much the area has to offer and wants visitors to share their enjoyment. The town of Texas is nestled into the beginning of the foothills of the Great Divide and is bordered by the rolling pastures of the Darling Downs while it overlooks the beautiful Dumaresq River with its lush flatlands and excellent fishing. Outside the town to the east are the rivers and parks of the granite highlands offering scenic, recreational and sporting enjoyment. The whole Texas area offers numerous attractive and enjoyable features. A full spectrum of facilities is available to visitors and tourists ranging from camping in a national park, comfortable accommodation in town, farmstay holidays, youth group facilities, through to convention accommodation at one of several private function and recreational facilities. Hunting, fishing, 4 whl driving, trail biking, camping, rock climbing, swimming, canoeing, farm activies, wildlife tours, and farm stay holidays ( for example ) are all available at supervised private facilities in the Texas area. |
